Super Foods For Summer Skin #healthiswealth – By Rasha

Happy June everyone!

If you’re like me, you’re accepting every invitation and chance to sit outside and enjoy the warm June sun. Patio brunches, tanning outside and morning runs are some of the many outdoor activities that I absolutely love during the Summer! It’s obvious we’re exposed to UVA and UVB rays now more than ever but there are a few superfoods you can incorporate in your diet to accelerate the healing process of sun damage and keep your skin hydrated!

These superfoods were introduced to me by my mom and sister who always stress the importance of prioritizing your health in order to enjoy success in other areas of your life! Hence the title hashtag.

Collagen

Your body naturally produces collagen to hold your bones and muscles together, protect your organs and to create skin elasticity. As you age, the rate of which collagen is produced decreases hence the aging skin. Collagen is the key ingredient for creating strength and elasticity for your skin!

Best collagen-sourced foods are bone broth, chicken, beef, egg whites and fish. A high-protein diet is obvious to increase collagen in your body however collagen powder supplements are a great option too!

My go-to methods:

I enjoy taking my time and eating my meals however when I’m on the go or at work I opt for collagen powder supplements. I came across Sproos Up Your Skin & Hair brand a few months ago and this collagen supplement is an easy, flavoured powder that can be added to your drink. This specific supplement has marine collagen, hyaluronic acid, and zinc just to name a few ingredients best for tackling aging skin and inflammation.

Vitamin C

You know the saying – an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Well for me, it’s more of an orange.

The skin is comprised of two important layers. The first is the epidermal outer layer and the second, inner dermal layer that is responsible for strength and elasticity. Normal skin has balanced levels of Vitamin C in both layers of skin that stimulate collagen development (more on this later) and protection against UV rays.

It only makes sense to keep skin synthesis optimal. An extra boost of Vitamin C – whether it’s in creams, serums or food choices – it’s beneficial to forming important proteins in skin, blood vessels and healing wounds and scar tissue.

The best high Vitamin C food options are:

Fruits like mango, berries, papaya, watermelon, and kiwi. For vegetables, consider green and red peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, tomatoes and leafy greens.

As a side note, steaming or microwaving some of these vegetables is a better option as it reduces the amount of nutrients lost

My go-to methods:

It’s summer, it’s hot, and easy to get sweaty. I’m not a fan of Vitamin C pill/powder supplements and would opt for these fruits as mid day snacks or throwing a few of these vegetables in my lunches. Keeping it simple for this one.

Vitamin E

As a young teen, my mom bought my skin care products and would hand them over only after explaining why she chose the Vitamin E-based products.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant – meaning it prevents cell damage by removing harmful cells and radicals. This ingredient is important for accelerating the healing process of sun damage. It also has calming, anti-inflammatory properties which is why it’s found in most eye creams.

Best nutritional sources of Vitamin E are nuts and seeds (peanuts, almonds, sunflower seeds), spinach, avocado, Aloe Vera juice, olive oil and shrimp.

My go-to-methods:

I love trail mix and aloe vera juice- nuts are an easy snack to carry around and aloe vera juice is a great alternative to sugary drinks. There is a variety of foods from which you can obtain Vitamin E from. Choose whichever works for you.

Strengthen and heal your skin from the inside out. Small changes in your diet will go a long way. Like me, feel free to adopt these vitamins in your diet if you haven’t already and let me know what you think!

Skincare With Witch Hazel – By Marisa Chiorello

I know many beautiful souls out there strive to achieve clear, healthy, glowing skin. This is especially important during the summertime when your skin is exposed to the sun’s rays on a daily basis. Well, summertime is here, and with it, comes my special secret for clear, healthy, glowing skin! Witch-hazel!

What Is Witch-Hazel?

Oh yes, this is my special secret! I use witch-hazel pore perfecting toner on my skin, mainly my face.  I know you’re probably thinking, “Witch-hazel? What’s that and how can it help my skin?” Witch-hazel is a plant properly known as Hamamelis virginiana. It’s typically found in the eastern and midwestern regions of the United States. It can also be found in southern Canada. The liquid of a witch-hazel plant is used to make the witch-hazel toner. Although, this toner can be mixed with other ingredients, such as aloe and rosewater, I use pure witch-hazel. I’ve been using it for months now, and it has truly transformed my skin.

How Witch-Hazel Can Help Your Skin

I struggle with acne flare-ups during PMS. The angry, red dots cover my chin and cheeks in clusters. This is super frustrating, upsetting, and my self-confidence totally plummets. However, I found that witch-hazel helps with my acne. I apply witch-hazel toner to my face at night with a cotton ball. The toner removes access oil, dirt, and bacteria from my face. This helps my acne flare-ups from getting worse. After using witch-hazel, I wake up in the morning free from any extra angry, red dots on my chin and cheeks. The toner also dries up my acne and helps it clear up quickly!

I have sensitive skin, and so many makeup remover wipes irritate it. My face starts to burn and it turns red. Witch-hazel toner can be used as makeup remover. I use the toner to remove my makeup (except for any eye makeup). I found that the gentle qualities of witch-hazel calm and soothe my skin.

Lastly, witch-hazel balances skin for a smooth complexion. I’ve noticed since using witch-hazel toner daily, that my skin appears more healthy and glowing.

      Brands Of Witch-Hazel

There are many different brands of witch-hazel toner. I use Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel Pore Perfecting Toner, and it comes in a 16 fl oz container. This brand is perfect for me because it’s affordable, fragrance free, 100% natural, and cruelty free. You can find Dickinson’s at various drugstores. If affordability is something you don’t worry about, you can purchase the Mario Badescu witch-hazel and rose water toner from Sephora. Either brand has proven, successful results!

       My Recommendation

Although, witch-hazel is known for its gentle properties, some people have experienced irritation from the toner. I recommend testing the toner on a small part of your skin to see how your skin reacts.

If you’re a beautiful soul that wants clear, healthy, glowing skin try my secret, and use witch-hazel toner daily!

Until next time,

Marisa

Luxury Skincare (That I Stole From My Mom)

Why on earth does some shit have to be so expensive? I’m fine with using skincare from the drugstore, but my bougie mother on the other hand MUST have her Valmont.

I wanted to see what was so good about all this stuff and why one cream costs almost $400. So I stole it from my mom (I’ll give it back don’t worry, maybe.. LOL).

It’s legit the same as anything else… the glycolic peels are just as good as the ones from Pixi, and the YSL chemical exfoliator didn’t really leave my skin that smooth. I mean it’s fun to have this stuff if you can afford it, but it really is nothing THAT special, you’re paying for a brand name rather than a product. Save your money peeps!

Legitimate Glue for Your Face…

A while back there was the whole black mask fad that everyone was on. They claim to pull out all the blackheads and clogged pores when you peel it off.

I was given this as a Christmas stocking stuffer so I thought I would give it a go. The brand I got was “Danielle” the blackhead clearing mask.

But if you look at the ingredients this shit is legitimately just like half glue. May as well buy a bottle of Elmer’s glue at staples the next time I’m there LOL!

All the reviews about these masks is that it hurts like a mother fucker when you take it off because it pulls out all the hairs too.

BUT…that’s actually why I still use this stuff! It kinda acts like wax for your face, so whenever I want all my baby hairs and chin hairs gone, I just use this mask and it’s like 90% gone. I also shave my face sometimes (LOL I know I’m such a man) but I wanna talk about face shaving for another post 🙂

Do any of you still use these types of masks?

Kiehl’s Cannabis Sativa Oil Review

Blemished skin girls, FEAR NO MORE! This oil is targeted at those with blemish prone skin, and I promise you my pimples have definitely reduced since I bought this product. I’ve been using it for a little over a month now, and my skin has never looked better! (aside from the few inevitable period pimples during that time of the month, but what can you do).

I use it morning and night, and you know how it’s hard to tell the progress with your skin on yourself because you look at yourself constantly all day every day. But the real test is when other people notice, and my co-workers have been saying that my skin is just brighter and overall healthier, so like… I’ll take it LOL!

It smells good to me (but that’s because I’m a pothead lol) so the smell might not be for everyone. I’ll insert an excerpt from the Kiehls website to showcase what exactly it is supposed to do.

“Inspired by Kiehl’s apothecary heritage, our calmative facial oil is uniquely formulated for problem skin including skin prone to blemishes, visible redness and discomfort. I strongly suggest any girls with problem skin try this stuff out! It did exactly what I was hoping the Dr. Jart Tiger Grass cream would do, but as you know that was a flop. If you’re interested you can check out that review here:
